Visiting the Saugatuck Dunes
My visit to Saugatuck Dunes was brief but very enjoyable. I was driving through the state and figured I’d stop by here for some scenery and easy hikes. I began on a short trail that went through the woods on my way to the shore. As one of the largest lakes in the world, you’ll hear the sounds of the ocean even on a windy day while you’re still in the forest. Above and below are photos of the trails passing through the woods. I’m not sure of the exact distance, but I’d estimate this hike was less than a mile from the main parking area to the beach.
The closer I got to the beach the louder the waves became, until I could finally see Lake Michigan through the trees. My previous days in Michigan were overcast and rainy, so I was happy to have a perfect day on the Lake!
For some reason I’ve always thought of sea gulls only being along the ocean. The seagulls here see seemed to be the only birds present on my walk today other than a circling turkey vulture.
I visited Saugatuck Dunes in the fall when it was too cold to swim but still warm enough outside to wear shorts and flip flops. The sun was strong so it felt pretty warm out.
From photos I’ve seen, this place can be pretty packed during the summer, but when I came I had the beach almost all to myself! The photo above and below show some of the beautiful scenery here. I’d highly recommend this place, even if you’re just passing by like I was.
