The capital of Nevada is the humble Carson City. There are things to do in Carson City of course, but other than being the capital and having some historic areas it’s not much of a destination for travelers. A city or town without a casino in Nevada is like a city or town in the rest of the country not having water or electricity. Carson City is of course no exception and along the main street you’ll find a few small sized casinos and restaurants. Above is an advertisement for one of the larger casinos in the capital, and on the right is the state’s capitol building. In my goal to visit every capitol building in America, this one here was number 32 for me.
Right down the street from the capitol building is the Nevada state museum. I regret not going inside, but I was mostly just passing through Carson City and missed out on this museum. Inside they provide the history of the state of Nevada as well as some interesting exhibits such as the oldest human mummy in North America that was found east of the city. They also display a skeleton of the world’s largest Columbian Woolly Mammoth. Next time I’m in the area I’ll be sure to visit the state museum and Virginia City!
Carson City’s main street is probably less than a mile long and has some casinos as I mentioned earlier and a few nice restaurants and speciality shops. I did go to what I thought was a farmers market on a Saturday morning but all they had was furniture and stained mattresses for sale. Above is another casino and a large mansion in the area that has been changed to a business. Below was a cool speciality shop that sold household items, and finally a nice restaurant I had breakfast at where I got a very good mimosa!
Immediately outside of Carson City you’ll enter small towns surrounded by rolling hills. In May I found snow on most of the mountains, and some beautiful scenery such as the bridge on the upper right.
